In this video, I add a small powerhead to my 230 litre freshwater community tank to give it a bit of current. My aim here is to explore how this affects fish behaviour, given that many of the species in the tank inhabit streams and rivers when in the wild. I also look at what a wave maker can do for the plants in the tank, and its water circulation.
The video covers the installation of the unit, along with the features and settings of the powerhead used. Specifically, this is the Hygger Lite Aquarium Wave Maker – HG172-6W. It’s a six watt powerhead designed for tanks up to 190 litres or 50 US gallons. I deliberately chose a low power device as I just wanted a light current in the tank. This one shifts up to 3000 litres or 792 gallons per hour. A 12 watt version is also available, for tanks up to 450 litres or 120 gallons. That model moves 8000 litres or 2114 gallons.
Although I have been considering purchasing a wave maker for a while, this unit was sent in free by our partner Hygger for me to test. Fish in the tank include harlequin rasboras, albino black widow tetras, bristlenose plecs and sword tails.
