Yes, you can!
This video outlines how to do it, but I’ve also included all the steps below.
The jar I used is a 650ml mayonnaise jar from a British supermarket. The other ingredients you need are: a little bit of wild mud or dirt; some ordinary play sand, a clump of pearlweed (micranthemum micranthemoides); dechlorinated water and a clip-on USB grow light. (See below for some product links.)
After washing the jar, add the mud to the bottom and tap it down then give it a little spray with water.
Pour in your play sand and even it out.
Break up your pearlweed into five or six smaller bits and plant them about 1-2cm into the sand using aquascaping tweezers.
I put a small sponge into the jar resting just above the plants and slowly poured in the dechlorinated water so as not to get the sand whipped up or to uproot the plants.
Then, clip on your grow light and place your new aquascape somewhere you can admire it. I put mine directly underneath my 22l cube nanoscape in the living room. Now just let it grow.
We’ll be back with update on how this jar pans out very soon. In the meantime, here are some links in case you want similar items to those used in the video.

I’m not sure you can buy live aquarium plants on Amazon in the US but you should be able to find it easily online or at your local aquatics centre.
